Blackjack X-ray Eyes Page 3

come on dude you can’t be serious,” Rob said.

Rob stopped the flow of the game. The dealer didn’t seem to care, but the other players at the table looked annoyed.

“I got this, I got this,” said Joshua waving his friend away, not glancing at Rob but looking at the cards in the deck seeing through them, one at a time. He calculated which card everyone including himself would get from the dealer. Then helper Rob turned into in a nag that Joshua had to snap at his friend to get him to back off. He placed 10 chips into circle bet area. The dealer passed out cards, his first a 10 the second card an 8 total 18. He was going to win, once the dealer flipped the down card to reveal a 17 total. Joshua grinned as the dealer went through the rest of the players, hitting for another card or standing waiting to see if they won. The dealer came to his turn and flipped over his card.

“Soft 17,” said the dealer, and Ace and 6. An Ace can be a 1 or 11, which ever makes the best hand. The dealer moved to take a card from the shoe.

“What?” Joshua said aloud, the dealer was supposed to stand.

Then it was his turn, suddenly Joshua remembered sometimes casinos played differently, his eyes flickered to the rules written on the green felt.

Dealer stands on a hard 17.

Dealer hits on a soft 17.

A hand becomes soft if there was an Ace it counted as an 11. He could loose, panic flooded his body causing his heart to speed up. This was plain gambling. He should’ve stayed blind.

Not only was Joshua a sidekick, but he was one of those sidekicks that made things worst. He should’ve confronted his parents about the bills offering to use the college fund it wouldn’t pay for everything, but it would be better.

The dealer drew a card from the shoe putting it next to the Ace, an 8. The Ace became 1, now the cards read 6, Ace, 8, total hand was 15. The dealer had to draw again.

“I hope you know what you’re doing,” said Rob behind Joshua.

Joshua didn’t answer, his head felt warm, and he was sweating. There was no point in using his power the game was in play. What did he want to do lose faster?

The dealer slid another card from the shoe. He held his breath. But please Lady luck if you’re real please, please, please he thought. The card was a 7, a bust. The dealer went over 21.

10 purple chips were place next to Joshua’s original bet. Dazed he collected 20 chips stood up and walked across the casino floor. When he was safely away from the table, he could breathe again.

“Dude,” said Rob, “I knew you could do it, but I didn’t think it would be so fast. Well how was it?”

  “What?”

“The high, you saved the day and got some extra change!”

“I-I messed up. At the 5 dollars table it worked the strategy and the counting system. But that-that a couple minutes ago was gambling I forgot about the soft 17 rules.”

Rob clapped his hand on Joshua’s back, “Don’t worry about it dude, you just need more field practice. Even a clumsy sidekick saves the day sometimes.”
